Trump Has Reacted Positively to Zelensky’s Open Letter to Putin

According to a report by Kyiv Post on Thursday, June 4, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed support for the idea of direct talks between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, following Zelensky’s recent open letter proposing face-to-face negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing war.

Zelensky’s proposal called for a personal meeting with Putin to explore possible steps toward a ceasefire and a broader diplomatic settlement to the conflict, which has continued since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The initiative has triggered renewed international discussion about whether high-level engagement between the two leaders could help break the long-standing diplomatic deadlock.

Reacting to the proposal, Trump said he welcomed the possibility of a meeting and described it as a potentially important development in efforts to resolve the war. Speaking in comments reported on the matter, he suggested that dialogue between the two leaders would be a positive step and could help advance peace efforts.

“Well, I don’t know. I’m glad they might be talking about a meeting,” Trump said, adding that he believed there had previously been areas of shared understanding between the parties. “I think it would be great for them to meet. They need to resolve this matter.”

Trump further remarked that both leaders could play a constructive role in ending the conflict, stating that he considered both Putin and Zelensky to be “very good people.” He also emphasised the importance of compromise from both sides, arguing that concessions would likely be necessary to reach any form of settlement.

In his comments, Trump also reiterated his long-standing position on the strategic importance of U.S. support to Ukraine, asserting that without American military assistance, Ukraine would struggle significantly in the conflict. He claimed that U.S. aid has been critical to Ukraine’s ability to sustain its defence efforts.
