The Current FCT Chairman is Running For His Fourth Term, Where The Law Says Only Twice - Kingibe

Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Nigeria’s National Assembly, has raised concerns over what she described as a disregard for the rule of law within the FCT chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), particularly in relation to the ongoing area council elections.

Speaking during her appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, February 20, 2026, Kingibe stressed that governance must strictly adhere to legal principles.

She cited the case of a current area council chairman who is reportedly seeking a fourth term in office, despite legal provisions limiting such positions to a maximum of two terms.

According to her, this development influenced her decision not to align with certain political interests in the FCT, even though she had previously built alliances and supported individuals within the APC structure.

Kingibe maintained that her position is not rooted in personal grievances but in her commitment to principled leadership and the welfare of FCT residents.

Her words: “I believe in governance that is about the rule of law. FCT APC has not been about the rule of law. The current chairman is running for his fourth term, where the law says only twice. So there are many, many issues that made me decide that this obviously does not align with my political views, in spite of the fact that we built lots of people who were also in the APC with me. It’s not personal. It’s about governance and about the people.”
