IGP Kayode Egbetokun Resigns at President Tinubu’s Request — Tunji Disu to Take Over

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has stepped down from office at the request of President Bola Tinubu, orange can confirm.

A presidency source said Mr. Egbetokun was asked to resign during a meeting with the president at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.

Mr. Egbetokun is expected to be replaced by Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Tunji Disu. While no official announcement has been made yet, sources at the presidency and the Nigeria Police Force headquarters told ORANGE that preparations are already underway for a formal handover ceremony.

Mr. Egbetokun was appointed the 22nd Inspector General of Police by President Tinubu on June 19, 2023, with his appointment confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31 of the same year.

Originally appointed at age 58, Mr. Egbetokun was due to retire on September 4, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60. However, an amendment to the Police Act by the National Assembly later allowed him to serve a full four-year term meaning he was expected to remain in office until October 31, 2027, unless removed by the president.

Although his tenure saw legal backing through the amended Police Act 2024, it was also marked by controversies, including accusations of human rights abuses by sections of the public.
