BAT Wants Fubara on His Knees at the Point When the Chief Judge Would’ve Set Up a Committee of 7- Obu

The General Secretary of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Mr. Maobuye Obu, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of orchestrating the political instability in Rivers State by using “two playbooks” to manage the conflict.

Speaking on Channels Television on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, Obu alleged that the President is deceiving Governor Siminalayi Fubara with promises of support while simultaneously giving the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, different key performance indicators (KPIs) that undermine the state’s executive.

Obu highlighted a critical turning point when the Governor reportedly met with President Tinubu for protection during the heat of the impeachment move.

He claimed the President chose not to intervene or call the pro-Wike Assembly members to order because he wants to keep the Governor “on his knees.”

Obu said, “The president told the governor that the emergency rule was in his favour and he is believing that dump story. Now, if the governor moved to the APC and told Nigerians that he went to the APC because he wanted protection, it is a shame currently that his new party members are the ones that want his head on a platter. They are the same set of people that are calling for his impeachment.”

He added, “When the motion was moved for his impeachment, Fubara ran to Tinubu, that was the time the president would have called Wike to call the assembly members to order but the president didn’t do that. The president wants the governor on his knees at the point when the Chief Judge would have set up a committee of seven.”

Obu also criticized the emergency rule invoked in March as an interloper government that is draining the state's resources, asserting that the President’s new party members are the very ones now calling for the Governor’s head on a platter.

The impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, have reached a critical stage after months of legislative deadlock.

The process officially escalated on January 8, 2026, when the Martins Amaewhule-led House of Assembly served a notice of gross misconduct, citing extra-budgetary spending and the demolition of the Assembly complex.

Despite a Rivers State High Court injunction issued on January 16 to halt the proceedings, the Assembly has remained resolute.

By January 19, the legislative arm urged the Chief Judge to ignore the judicial interference and constitute the seven-man investigative panel.
