Why Should I Beg the President When Everyone Knows My Stand?”- Nyesom Wike
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Governor of Rivers State, has dismissed rumours regarding a private meeting with the President to pledge political loyalty, labelling the accusations as both irrational and baseless.
During a recent media engagement, Wike addressed allegations that he promised to “hold down” the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the President’s benefit. He firmly rejected these assertions, pointing out that his political alignment has always been a matter of public record and requires no clandestine confirmation.
The minister argued that there would be no logical reason to seek a private audience with the president to make such commitments when his views were already openly expressed. In his words, “Why should I beg the president when everyone knows my stand?”
He criticised the narrative as a manufactured attempt to distort the truth, insisting that his political path has never been shrouded in mystery.
Wike noted that both his allies and his detractors were well aware of his position throughout the election cycle, and he warned against reducing political discourse to fabrications intended to smear reputations.
Furthermore, Wike challenged the validity of the alleged meeting by highlighting the absence of specific details. He questioned who organised the gathering and who else was present, noting that if such a high-level discussion had actually occurred, key figures would have been identified.
He maintained that the claims are entirely devoid of evidence and credibility. According to the minister, his past actions and public declarations serve as a clear indicator of his stance, rendering any secret assurances redundant.
He concluded by stating that the circulation of rumours regarding backroom deals only serves to foster instability and suspicion within the political arena. Wike expressed his disdain for dishonesty, emphasising that transparency is vital for the health of any political association. He clarified that offering support to a leader does not equate to a loss of personal integrity or autonomy.
Instead, he believes that political alliances should be rooted in public conviction rather than hidden negotiations. Asserting that he has never shied away from voicing his opinions, Wike called on observers and politicians alike to prioritise factual information over unverified claims.
