Super Eagles Captain William Troost-Ekong Retires from International Football After Nigeria Failed to qualify for 2026 World Cup

In a shocking turn of events, Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has announced his retirement from international football, just weeks before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The 32-year-old defender, who earned 83 caps for Nigeria since making his debut in 2015, confirmed his decision through Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Troost-Ekong, a cornerstone of Nigeria’s defense for nearly a decade, featured in five major tournaments and helped Nigeria secure three medals. His standout performance at the 2023 AFCON earned him the Player of the Tournament award, leading the Super Eagles to a silver-medal finish.

The decision comes at a crucial time for the team, especially after young defender Benjamin Frederick suffered a knee injury ruling him out of both the upcoming World Cup and AFCON. Coach Eric Chelle will now have to reshuffle the defensive lineup as Nigeria, placed in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania, prepares to pursue a fourth continental title.

Troost-Ekong’s retirement marks the end of an era for the Super Eagles, leaving fans and teammates reflecting on his immense contributions to Nigerian football.
