Fubara: What is Wike cooking again? I hope he is not laying foundation for another SoE- Paul Ibe
Tension has re-emerged in Rivers State only two months after the return of democratic governance, following the withdrawal of emergency rule. The renewed conflict is between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Martins Amaewhule-led State House of Assembly, signalling that the political crisis in the state may not yet be over.
A report from Daily Trust revealed that during its 31st Legislative Sitting, the House strongly criticised the worsening state of public schools. Lawmakers cited the destruction at Township School in Port Harcourt and similar cases in other parts of the state, saying these incidents reflect a broader breakdown in education infrastructure.
Legislators expressed anger that numerous primary and secondary schools have fallen into disrepair. They accused the executive arm of government of showing inadequate commitment to improving the learning environment for children. Their criticism was reinforced by the House Committee on Education, which presented findings suggesting mismanagement and possible neglect.
The lawmakers also demanded financial accountability from Governor Fubara. They questioned how more than N600 billion allegedly left in the treasury by former Sole Administrator Rear Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas (rtd) when he exited the interim administration in September had been used. The Assembly insisted the governor must publicly clarify the status of the funds.
This latest confrontation has generated mixed reactions across the political landscape. Paul Ibe, spokesperson for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, weighed in on the unfolding dispute. He faulted both the lawmakers and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, hinting that Wike might be engineering fresh instability. “What is Wike up to again? Hopefully, this isn’t an attempt to pave the way for another state of emergency in Rivers,” he remarked.
