DSS Releases Four Suspected IPOB Members, Awards Them ₦20 Million Compensation
The Department of State Services (DSS) has released four individuals previously arrested over alleged links to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), approving an initial ₦20 million compensation for them.
The suspects, identified as Emele Uduma Ibe, Berefgagha Appah, Ondokeyilemi Aggry and Oyeinmokebebeton Aggry, were arrested in May 2022 in Sampou and Akeddei communities in Bayelsa State.
Security sources disclosed that investigations revealed the four had been deceived into believing they would receive monthly payments of ₦100,000 under the Federal Government’s Amnesty Programme. They were reportedly recruited by IPOB members who are currently standing trial.
Following their clearance, DSS Director-General, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, approved ₦5 million for each individual, bringing the total compensation to ₦20 million. The Service will also provide them with medical and psychological support.
Their lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, commended the DSS leadership for its commitment to human rights and national security, while one of the released suspects, Ibe, described the development as the happiest day of his life.
He said the experience had taught him an important lesson which he intended to share with others.
