APC Suffers Major Defection as Six Serving Lawmakers Quit Party Ahead of 2027
According to a report by the Nigerian Tribune on Sunday, October 4, 2026, six serving members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing internal divisions, alleged injustice, deception and what they described as poor leadership within the party and the state.
The lawmakers communicated their decisions through separate resignation letters dated October 4, which were made available to journalists. They reportedly arrived at the decision after consultations with various stakeholders and concluded that remaining in the party was no longer in line with their political interests and those of their constituents.
Those who resigned from the APC include Ibrahim Tukur, representing Bakura Constituency; Bashir Abubakar; Aliyu Ango Kagar; Nasiru Abdullahi; Mukhtar Nasiru Jikan Shehu; and Faruk Dosara.
Tukur, in his resignation letter, said he had carefully reviewed the situation within the APC and Zamfara State before deciding to leave the party with immediate effect. He alleged that the party’s stakeholders in the state lacked unity, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty and what he described as unfair treatment of members.
The Bakura representative also raised concerns about the security situation in his constituency and across Zamfara State. He alleged that the government had not done enough to address the persistent insecurity affecting residents.
Tukur further attributed the situation to what he described as the governor’s lack of concern and poor leadership, saying the challenges facing the state had become increasingly difficult for citizens and political representatives.
“After careful and wide consultations,” Tukur stated, “I have decided to resign my membership of the All Progressives Congress with immediate effect.”
Although he announced his departure from the APC, Tukur acknowledged the support and cooperation he received from the party’s leadership and members during his time as a member.
The other five lawmakers were also said to have submitted resignation letters outlining similar concerns about the party and the administration in the state.
Reacting to the development, former chairman of Bukkuyum Local Government Area, Abubakar Faru, praised the lawmakers for what he described as a bold and courageous decision.
Faru argued that their decision reflected their concern for the welfare of their constituents, describing the resignations as timely and saying the lawmakers had acted in what they believed was the best interest of the people they represent.
