Two Kingpins Nabbed as NDLEA Busts Nigerian-Mexican M+th Cartel, Uncovers Massive Dr¥g Lab in Enugu

 

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled a Nigerian-Mexican dr¥g cartel operating a clandestine m+thamphet@mine laboratory in Eziama community, Obeagu, Awgu LGA of Enugu State.

Two kingpins, 45-year-old Chukwu Obumneme Christopher, aka Brown, and 60-year-old Chukwu Georginus Monday, aka George, were arrested after months of intelligence gathering and surveillance. They were operating the lab in collaboration with Rodriguez Villanueva, a suspected Mexican cartel member based in Mexico City.

The suspects were arraigned before Justice Mabel Taiye Segun Bello of the Federal High Court, Enugu, on a five count charge bordering on conspiracy, organising, managing and financing a dr¥g tr@fficking organisation, as well as unlawful possession of precursor chemicals used in m+thamphet@mine production.

They pleaded to the charges, while the court fixed October 21, 2026, for trial following the NDLEA’s request for an accelerated hearing. Uchenna, aka Uche Celestine Ikemefuna Iwuchukwu; and Villanueva, who are also named in the charges, remain at large.

NDLEA investigations revealed that surveillance conducted between December 1 and 4, 2025, tracked Brown across Lagos, Enugu and Anambra before leading operatives to the Obeagu compound, where they discovered a laboratory equipped with improvised reactors and distillation equipment.

A search uncovered 690 litres of m+thyl@mine, 1,000 litres of isopr%pyl alc%hol, 300 litres of hydr%chloric acid, 290 litres each of t%luene and acetone, 400 litres of liquid s%dium hydr%xide, 125kg of N-phenyl@cetam+de, 414kg of lead acet@te and 769.6kg of t@rtaric acid, among other substances.

At George’s family residence, operatives also recovered eight large fuel tanks, four commercial gas burners, four dehydrators and 11kg of eph+drine.

NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), vowed that fleeing suspects would be tracked down and brought to justice, stressing that Nigeria would not become a haven for transnational dr¥g cartels.
