Police Rescue Two Abandoned Babies in Abuja, Launch Search for Their Mothers

The FCT Police Command has rescued two newborn babies abandoned in separate communities in Abuja and raised concerns over the rising cases of child abandonment.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said, “This newborn baby I have in my hands was abandoned by the mother, whom we don’t know, at an uncompleted building in Kurudu.” She identified the child as a boy and disclosed that “the same two days ago in Gwagwalada another baby girl was abandoned.”

According to her, “we’ve been having this trending issues of this child abandonment within these communities.” She added, “We had some in Durumi and a few of them in Gwagwalada and so on and so forth within these local communities.”

Adeh questioned the circumstances behind the incidents, asking, “What could be the issue?” She further asked, “who are these women? What is the problem? Why are they abandoning these infants? What is the story behind it?”

She said Social Welfare officials would take custody of the Kurudu baby, noting, “We’ve taken the other ones to them, and this one that was picked up yesterday at an uncompleted building in Kurudu area, abandoned by the mother, will be given to them as well.”

The Chief Social Welfare Officer with the FCT Child Development Department, Leman Lawan, said the baby would be placed in foster care, medically examined and kept for three to six months before potentially being considered for fostering.

Adeh said the police would continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the abandonment, adding, “We will continue to do our investigation, and we’ll come up with more videos to sensitize these young ladies that are abandoning these babies.” She concluded, “I will see you once again with the updates of this.”
