Adams Oshiomhole: If We Conduct A Free And Fair Election In His Family, Can He Win? - Opara Asks
Maxwell Opara, a chieftain of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) and House of Representatives aspirant, has questioned the political influence of former Edo State Governor and ex-Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Adams Oshiomhole, saying political leaders should be judged by their performance and ability to earn the confidence of the people.
Opara made the remarks during an interview on SYMFONI TV on Monday, June 6, 2026, while discussing Nigeria’s democratic development and the role prominent political figures have played in shaping the country’s political landscape.
According to Opara, Nigerians have become increasingly interested in holding public officials accountable for their actions. He argued that political leaders who have occupied influential positions should expect their records to be examined by citizens and should be prepared to defend their contributions to governance.
He maintained that democracy thrives when leaders are transparent and willing to subject themselves to public scrutiny. In his view, those seeking public support should demonstrate that they have earned the trust and confidence of the electorate through their actions rather than relying on political reputation alone.
While criticizing Oshiomhole’s political standing, Opara questioned the former labour leader’s popularity, suggesting that genuine democratic support should be measured through credible electoral processes.
“If we conduct a free and fair election in his family, can he win?” Opara asked during the interview.
The NDC chieftain did not provide evidence to support the rhetorical question but used it to underscore his criticism of Oshiomhole’s political influence.
Opara argued that Nigerians should carefully evaluate the records of politicians before deciding whom to support at the polls. According to him, elections should focus on issues that directly affect citizens, including governance, economic development, security, education, and the overall welfare of the population.
He said voters should avoid making decisions based solely on political rhetoric or public image, insisting that the country's democracy would be strengthened if candidates were judged on their achievements and commitment to public service.
According to Opara, accountability remains one of the key pillars of democratic governance. He stressed that leaders who have held public office should be open to criticism and public assessment, as this helps citizens make informed electoral decisions.
He further stated that Nigerians now have greater access to information than in previous years, making it easier for voters to examine the backgrounds and performances of political office holders. This, he said, places greater responsibility on politicians to maintain transparency and uphold the trust of the electorate.
