When Jonathan Was President, I Went To Villa And Saw His ADC Driving One Big Mercedes-Benz-Adebayo

Prince Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, has raised concerns about what he considers the extravagant lifestyles displayed by some public officials in Nigeria.

Speaking during an interview on Vanguard News TV on Thursday, June 18, 2026, Adebayo discussed issues relating to governance, accountability, transparency, and the standards expected of individuals serving in public office. He stressed the importance of ensuring that government officials live within means that can be reasonably explained by their legitimate earnings.

While reflecting on his observations of public service over the years, Adebayo recounted an experience from the administration of former President that he said left a significant impression on him. According to him, the incident raised questions about the source of wealth and luxury enjoyed by some individuals occupying public positions.

Recounting the experience, Adebayo said, “When Jonathan was president, I went to the Villa and saw his ADC riding one big Mercedes-Benz and I asked him, ‘All the money he has collected since he joined the army, can it buy this car?’”

He argued that individuals entrusted with sensitive government responsibilities should be able to clearly explain how they acquired their assets. According to him, public office holders have a duty to demonstrate integrity by maintaining lifestyles that correspond with their lawful income. He noted that such transparency is crucial in strengthening public trust and confidence in government institutions.

Adebayo further maintained that effective accountability measures would help reduce public suspicion regarding corruption and abuse of office. He stated that when officials are required to account for their wealth and possessions, it becomes easier to promote ethical conduct and responsible leadership across government agencies.

The SDP presidential hopeful emphasized that transparency and accountability remain essential pillars of good governance. He suggested that stronger oversight mechanisms and stricter enforcement of ethical standards could improve public perception of government institutions and encourage greater responsibility among public servants.
