I’m Happy We Have Been Able To Hold Our National Convention Contrary To What People Thought-Wike

On Friday, April 3, 2026, the Daily Post reported that Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike confirmed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) plans to present a candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

Wike’s statement comes amid ongoing debates about the PDP’s future and its readiness for the next electoral cycle. He emphasized that, despite speculation about the party’s decline, it remains active and well-positioned to participate effectively in national politics.

The minister noted that predictions of the PDP fading away have proven inaccurate, highlighting recent organizational developments as evidence of the party’s continued relevance. During his regular media briefing in Abuja, Wike stressed that the PDP is actively preparing for a comeback and that critics may have underestimated its resilience and capacity to reorganize for upcoming elections.

He pointed out that the party has maintained internal processes and undertaken key organizational activities, demonstrating its operational strength. These measures, according to Wike, are part of a deliberate strategy to stabilize the PDP and position it for future political contests.

Wike also highlighted the success of the party’s national convention, describing it as a significant achievement. He noted that many had doubted the PDP’s ability to organize such an event, but its smooth execution has strengthened confidence among members and supporters.

Reiterating the party’s political relevance, Wike emphasized that the PDP remains a formidable force capable of competing at the highest levels. He said, “I’m happy we have been able to hold our national convention contrary to what people thought. I remember that sometimes when we had these discussions, you were not sure if PDP has come to stay, and I did tell you that PDP must stay.”
