Defence Minister Musa Breaks Silence On How 200 Terrorists Overpowered Slain Commander

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has revealed details surrounding the recent killing of senior military officers, stating that a commander was overwhelmed by more than 200 insurgents in a coordinated attack.

Speaking in an interview reported by Arise News on April 15, 2026, Musa described the attackers as part of a determined and ideologically driven force, noting that such groups often operate with little regard for their own safety. He explained that the insurgents’ belief system makes them willing to take extreme risks, complicating efforts by security forces to contain them.

The defence minister also highlighted the role of local informants in aiding insurgent operations. According to him, individuals within affected communities sometimes provide critical intelligence about troop strength and deployment, enabling attackers to plan overwhelming assaults on military positions.

He disclosed that in the recent incident, information about the limited number of soldiers at a location was allegedly leaked, allowing insurgents to mobilize a much larger force to overrun the base. Musa described this as a key factor in the success of the attack.

In addition, he identified improvised explosive devices as a major threat to military personnel, noting that a commanding officer was recently killed in Monguno after encountering an IED.

Musa dismissed suggestions of negligence or poor equipment maintenance, defending the fallen brigade commander as a capable and dedicated officer. He attributed the outcome primarily to the scale and intensity of the assault rather than any individual failure.

Despite the losses, the minister maintained that Nigeria is making progress in its fight against insurgency. He called on citizens to continue supporting the armed forces, emphasizing that collective effort remains essential in addressing the country’s security challenges.
