2027: Gov Seyi Makinde, PDP Allies To Defect To NDC Soon, ADC Chieftain Says
The National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, is reportedly set to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday, according to credible sources.
According to The Punch, party insiders from both the NNPP and ADC were said to have confirmed that he would formally announce his defection in Kano. A senior ADC official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, indicated that the party’s National Chairman and Secretary—David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola—are expected to officially welcome him into the party.
He further explained that the hesitation of Bala Mohammed to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was linked to his alignment with other political figures such as Kwankwaso, Makinde, and Dickson, noting that they are part of the same alliance and share common interests.
He added that their collective aim was to work together as a united front to challenge the administration of President Bola Tinubu, arguing that its policies had negatively impacted many Nigerians and increased poverty levels. He emphasized that the alliance was prepared to collaborate closely and make necessary compromises in order to achieve their shared political objectives.
It was further gathered that Kwankwaso may be joined by the immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo, who recently resigned from office, a development confirmed by his media aide, Ibrahim Shuaibu.
In addition, sources within the ADC disclosed that the party has been pursuing broader alliances beyond Kwankwaso’s anticipated defection, including ongoing discussions with leaders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress. These talks reportedly involve former Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson and other stakeholders.
An insider also noted that some members of the Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are expected to align with the Nigeria Democratic Congress in the near future, as part of efforts to strengthen the emerging opposition coalition.
Another ADC leader, who also spoke on condition of anonymity on Thursday, said, “We have established that Makinde and Dickson are not working for President Bola Tinubu. Some other PDP leaders with Makinde will also move to the NDC. That will make the party a strong opposition platform, and they will use it to negotiate with the ADC as a bloc instead of as individuals.”
