“History of Political Coalitions”: Atiku Reacts as Peter Obi Officially Declares for ADC
Former Nigerian Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has reacted following the official declaration of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The reaction came shortly after Peter Obi publicly announced his defection to the ADC, a move that has continued to generate conversations across the political space in Nigeria. Atiku’s reaction was made known through his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, where he described the moment as historic and significant for the future of political coalitions in the country.
According to the statement made on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, Atiku commended his former presidential running mate for the bold decision, describing it as a “history of political coalition” in Nigeria. He further praised Obi’s courage and vision, stating that such a move would help strengthen democracy and promote unity among opposition parties.
However, Atiku went on to congratulate Obi on his intention to join the party, expressing confidence that the decision would inspire more politicians and well-meaning Nigerians to align with the coalition. He emphasized that the move would help build a strong opposition capable of delivering good governance, peace, and prosperity to the nation.
Here is what Atiku wrote on his official X handle:
“Today marks a significant moment in the history of political coalitions in our country, with the official declaration of my brother and associate, @PeterObi, into the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
It is my pleasure to welcome him officially, as we look forward to a robust working relationship that will foster a virile opposition, one that will ultimately form a government capable of bringing prosperity and peace to our people. And as the @ADCNig Coalition train leaves Enugu, the capital of the Southeast region, I hope this inspires other patriots to join the cause with the train headed in their direction.”
