UK-based Nigerian man d+es of cancer after completing his Master’s degree in Plymouth

A Nigerian man, Hammed, who recently completed a Master’s degree in Business and Management at the University of Plymouth, has passed away in the United Kingdom after his health deteriorated rapidly due to advanced cancer.

Details of his d+ath emerged through a GoFundMe campaign initially set up by Mariam Ajibola and Mohammed Chaanda to support Hammed’s medical treatment. The campaign was later updated to seek funds for his burial.

Hammed, a 36-year-old Lagos native from Ayete, Oyo State, moved to the UK in September to pursue his Master’s degree. Despite being diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, he persevered through the physical and emotional challenges to complete his studies.

Described by the organisers as the last of four children and “the joyful heart of his home,” Hammed was remembered as cheerful, friendly, and deeply committed to others. In recent weeks, his condition worsened rapidly. Efforts to fly him back to Nigeria so he could spend his final days with family were halted after doctors declared him medically unfit for travel.

The GoFundMe campaign appealed for support to ensure Hammed received a dignified burial in the UK. The organisers noted that approximately £5,000 was needed to cover a 50-year burial plot and a coffin, and the campaign raised over £6,000 before donations were temporarily paused.

Hammed’s d+ath comes just days after another Nigerian, Chiowa Obeigbe, was found deceased in his Gloucester apartment in the UK, highlighting the challenges faced by Nigerians living abroad.
