IGP Speaks on Wike, Police-Navy Confrontation: I Was Not Present, But Investigation Has Begun

Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has offered clarity on the recent confrontation between personnel of the Nigerian Police Force and the Nigerian Navy, an incident that has attracted public scrutiny and drawn comments from Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike.

In a video shared on SYMFONI TV, Egbetokun stressed that he was not physically present when the clash occurred but had been thoroughly briefed by senior officers. He assured Nigerians that the matter is receiving full attention, noting that the leadership of the police views the incident as a serious inter-agency concern requiring immediate action.

According to the IGP, a formal investigation has already begun to establish what led to the confrontation. He stated that the probe aims to uncover the facts, determine whether any lapses occurred, and ensure that those responsible are held accountable according to established laws and procedures. The investigation is also expected to introduce measures that will prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The clash has generated significant public debate, especially after Governor Wike expressed concern over what appeared to be a breakdown in coordination between the two security institutions. His remarks underscored the importance of maintaining operational harmony and clear communication among Nigeria’s armed and security agencies.

Egbetokun’s response is being viewed as an effort to ease tensions and reaffirm the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to professionalism and transparency. By openly acknowledging the incident and confirming that a probe is underway, the police leadership seeks to reinforce public confidence and demonstrate its readiness to address inter-agency disputes promptly and responsibly.

The IGP reassured citizens that the investigation will reveal the true cause of the confrontation and guide corrective actions. His stance reflects a proactive approach to strengthening accountability and ensuring effective collaboration across Nigeria’s security architecture.
