Where I’m living, I woke up one morning, I saw the name of somebody, It’s not supposed to be so-Wike

In a report by This Day News on Thursday, October 9, 2025, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed concern over the arbitrary naming of streets in Abuja without proper authorization from relevant authorities.

Speaking on the issue, Wike revealed that even within his residential area, he recently discovered a street had been named after an unknown individual without official approval.

The Minister recounted waking up one morning to see a new street name in his vicinity, describing the act as irregular and contrary to administrative procedures.

He questioned how such decisions could be made without consultation, especially in areas where senior government officials reside, stressing the need for order in the system.

Wike insisted that the naming of streets within the Federal Capital Territory must follow due process and reflect the values and achievements of deserving individuals.

He added that the current administration will ensure that streets and public spaces are named only after people who have made verifiable contributions to the city or the nation.

The Minister emphasized that national figures, including athletes and sports professionals, could be considered in the future for such recognition based on merit.

He pointed out that naming streets after accomplished Nigerians serves as a way to preserve their legacy and inspire future generations.

Wike stated that public infrastructure should reflect collective pride and honor those who have genuinely advanced the country’s development.

He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in the management of Abuja’s infrastructure, including street naming and urban development initiatives.

“Even where I’m living, I woke up one early morning, I saw the name of somebody. I said, as a Minister, I’m living here. That is not the way it’s supposed to be.

Tomorrow, you may see footballers or our sports people who may have done well and it is said, name this street after them in order to remember them tomorrow for what they have done for the country, for what they have done for the city," Wike said.
