Alleged Coup:It Started Around 2024 From What I Heard; A Lot of Them Are Disgruntled Officers-Sowore

Human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has spoken about an alleged failed military coup that recently made headlines in Nigeria. During an interview with News Central TV, Sowore said he was not surprised by the development, claiming that information about the planned coup had been circulating for a while.

According to him, the plan began as far back as 2024 and continued into 2025. Sowore explained that some of his sources told him the government had already been aware of the discussions among some soldiers, which led to several arrests even before the coup attempt became public.

He also linked the government’s harsh response to the End Bad Governance protests to the fear of a possible coup. Sowore noted that during those protests, Russian flags were seen on the streets, which made authorities more suspicious, especially as several countries in the Sahel region had recently fallen under military rule.

Sowore said many of the officers involved were unhappy with how the country was being run and felt neglected. “It started around 2024, from what I heard, so I think maybe they didn’t strike then. And then they kept monitoring some of them. A lot of them are disgruntled officers in the army who felt that things are not going the way they should,” he said.

However, he made it clear that he would never support military rule again, no matter the situation. “I can never support military rule again,” Sowore firmly stated, emphasizing that democracy, though imperfect, remains the best path forward for Nigeria.
