Sack the NFF board If Nigeria fails to qualify for the World Cup— Mikel Obi

Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has called for the disbandment of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) if the national team fails to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria’s qualification hopes are hanging by a thread after a draw with South Africa in Group C left the Eagles third with 11 points, six behind leaders Bafana Bafana, and only two matches left.

Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, Mikel expressed frustration at the federation’s leadership, insisting that p++r administration is behind Nigeria’s struggles.

“If Nigeria doesn’t qualify for the World Cup, the entire NFF board has to go… it’s unacceptable,” the former Chelsea midfielder said. “We didn’t qualify for Qatar — the last World Cup — and now it looks like again we are not going to make it. Honestly, I have nothing to say about it. It is just h+rrible.”

Mikel stressed that while players share some responsibility, the bigger problem lies with football administrators.

“Do you blame the players? No, I don’t. Yes, the players have to take responsibility, but are you gonna blame the players alone? No… that’s why people disrespect African football,” he added.

He further argued that those running Nigerian football must be held “accountable” for the nation’s decline.

Nigeria face a difficult task to reach the finals, though slim hopes remain. The Eagles will travel to Lesotho before hosting Benin Republic in their final two qualifiers.

Victories in both games, combined with favorable results elsewhere, could see the team sneak in as one of Africa’s four best runners-up for a playoff spot.
