Wike’s Camp: They Know If Jonathan Joins, Even Peter Obi Will Realise The Game Is Over-Source
According to Daily Trust, fresh divisions have emerged within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, are reportedly rallying behind former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi as the party’s potential flagbearer in the 2027 elections.
Party insiders revealed that the debate over who should challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next general election has split the PDP into three major camps: those advocating for former President Goodluck Jonathan, those backing Obi, and others pushing for Oyo State governor Seyi Makinde.
Supporters of Jonathan believe his national appeal and political experience make him the strongest candidate against the APC. They argue that his eligibility for just one more term — due to constitutional limits — makes him attractive to northern stakeholders who are keen on reclaiming the presidency in 2031.
Obi, however, is also viewed as a strategic option. Despite running under the Labour Party in 2023, he has consistently stated that a single four-year term would be sufficient to reposition Nigeria, a stance that aligns with the PDP’s internal zoning calculations. Wike’s allies reportedly prefer Obi as a way to neutralize Jonathan’s potential return.
“Jonathan has the network and recognition, but Wike’s camp is working to frustrate his chances. They see Obi as a better compromise who can prevent Jonathan from taking over the party machinery. They know if Jonathan joins, even Obi will realise the game is over,” one party source told Daily Trust.
Another senior PDP leader added that the power tussle reflects broader struggles for control of the party’s future direction. “You cannot court figures like Jonathan and Obi while still allowing one bloc to dominate decision-making,” he warned.
The unfolding drama highlights ongoing uncertainty over the PDP’s strategy as it seeks to reclaim power in 2027.
