Jubilation as Nigerian Gov Announces Over N100k Minimum Wages, N500k for Doctors, Others
According to a report from The Cable, Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has announced a major upward review of the minimum wage for workers in the state.
Civil servants’ minimum wage has been increased from N76,000 to N104,000, while doctors will now earn a minimum of N503,000, up from N215,000.
Similarly, lecturers in tertiary institutions saw their minimum wage raised from N119,000 to N222,000, among other adjustments.
Speaking during the announcement, Governor Uzodimma stressed that his administration places workers’ welfare at the heart of its governance.
He noted that Imo people have faced multiple challenges since he assumed office, including the COVID-19 pandemic, insecurity, wage disputes, economic reforms, and the removal of fuel subsidy.
The governor emphasised the importance of maintaining harmony with organised labour, stating:
When workers are paid well, productivity rises, families are happier, and the local economy grows.”
He described the wage increase as an investment in the people, aimed at stimulating economic and political activities while ensuring that workers remain motivated and respected.
On the state’s finances, Uzodimma disclosed that Imo’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) has grown remarkably from about N400 million to over N3 billion monthly.
He added that federal allocations to the state have also risen from between N5 billion and N7 billion in 2020 to about N14 billion currently.
The development comes days after the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) threatened to embark on a nationwide strike within seven days unless the federal government refunded funds allegedly diverted from the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF).
The union also demanded the immediate inauguration of the National Pension Commission (PENCOM) governing board, warning of mass action if its demands were not met.
