2027: Adeleke, Mbah, Mutfwang, Dauda Lawal, Kefas Agbu, and Fubara Face Tough Decisions
According to a report by The Vanguard on Sunday, July 20, 2025, six first-term governors under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are facing critical decisions as Nigeria heads toward the 2027 elections.
With the PDP weakened by internal strife and defections, Governors Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), and Kefas Agbu (Taraba) must now decide whether to remain in a declining party, defect to the ruling APC, or join emerging platforms like the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In Osun, Adeleke denies rumours of defection but faces pressure amid allegations from APC figures like Senator Iyiola Omisore.
In Enugu, Mbah maintains a low profile while weighing the political cost of staying with the PDP in a region traditionally loyal to the party.
Plateau’s Mutfwang contends with legislative pushback and pressure from PDP elder Jonah Jang. Lawal of Zamfara, though vocal in his PDP loyalty, is isolated in the APC-dominated North-West.
Fubara battles political tension in Rivers following a rift with former governor Nyesom Wike, whose grip on PDP structures remains firm. In Taraba, Agbu’s reform agenda is at risk as the PDP’s instability undermines his efforts.
The choices these governors make will impact not only their political futures but also the survival of the PDP.
The upcoming national convention in August could be decisive. As the APC consolidates power and the ADC courts disillusioned leaders, the PDP’s fate hangs in the balance.
The actions of these six governors may well shape Nigeria’s political direction heading into 2027.
