Rivers Crisis: Suspension of Siminalayi Fubara, Others to be resolved by NASS - Godswill Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio has assured that the National Assembly (NASS) will take decisive steps to resolve the lingering political crisis in Rivers State.

Speaking on Thursday during the commissioning of the Kugbo Taxi and Bus Terminal in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Akpabio emphasized that the legislature is committed to restoring peace and stability in the troubled state.

According to Vanguard, he disclosed that strategic efforts were already underway to address the root causes of the crisis and promote reconciliation among all political actors involved.

We are determined to ensure that normalcy returns to Rivers State.

The National Assembly will work closely with all parties involved to ensure lasting peace and progress for the people,” the Senate President stated.

The crisis, which erupted three months ago, led to the controversial suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the state legislature. In response to the political unrest, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a six-month suspension for Fubara and imposed a state of emergency in the state.

Since his suspension, Governor Fubara has met with President Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, his former political mentor, in an effort to mend strained relations.

Wike, who has recently indicated a willingness to reconcile, has urged Fubara to engage with other aggrieved stakeholders in Rivers State as part of the peace-building process.

The National Assembly’s intervention, according to Akpabio, aims to bridge the widening political divide and ensure the people of Rivers enjoy stability and democratic governance.

As political tensions ease, observers are watching closely to see if reconciliation efforts will yield sustainable peace in the oil-rich state.
