Ghana Dr¥k+rds Association Gives Government 3-Week Ultimatum Over alc+hol Prices

The Ghana dr¥nk+rds Association has issued a three-week ultimatum to the government, demanding an immediate reduction in the prices of alc+holic beverages, citing the recent appreciation of the cedi against major foreign currencies.

In a viral social media video, the association’s president, Moses Drybones, lamented that despite the strengthening of the local currency, alc+hol prices remain excessively high, with a recent 15% increase placing pressure on bar owners and consumers alike.

“To date, the cost of alc+hol is still expensive. If you want to buy alc+hol, there’s an increment in the price, which is 15%. The increment has an effect on people operating drinking spots,” Drybones stated.

He noted that while the government has announced reductions in the prices of food and transport due to the improved exchange rate, alc+holic drinks have been left out.

“We’ve heard that the Ghana cedi has appreciated against the dollar, forcing the president to reduce the price of goods in the market. He has reduced the price of transport and food items in the market; however, they have not heard anything about alc+hol,” he said.

Drybones called on President John Mahama and the Minister of Trade to meet with the association within the grace period to find a resolution.

“We are therefore calling on the president and the minister of trade that we have given them a 3-week grace period to sit with us and discuss or find a solution to reduce the prices of alc+hol and beverages,” he added.

The association warned that if their demands are not met within the stipulated period, a nationwide protest involving approximately 16.6 million members will be staged.
