Video: Rivers Assembly Issues 48-Hour Ultimatum to Governor Fubara to Present 2025 Budget

The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara to present the 2025 budget for legislative consideration. The directive was announced during a plenary session in Port Harcourt, following a motion moved by Deputy Speaker Dumle Maol.

The lawmakers also informed the governor of their intention to amend the Local Government Law No. 5 of 2018 and the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission Law No. 2 of 2018. This move is aimed at aligning the state’s laws with the Electoral Act, in light of the recent Supreme Court judgment that nullified last year’s local government elections.

In his address, Speaker Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule criticized Governor Fubara’s directive for heads of Local Government Administration to assume control of the councils.

On January 2nd, Governor Fubara signed the ₦1.1 trillion 2025 budget into law after presenting it to lawmakers led by Victor Oko-Jumbo. The latest development underscores the ongoing tensions between the executive and legislative arms of the state government over budgetary and legal matters.
