Meranda Steps Down as Lagos Assembly Speaker After 49 Days, Returns as Deputy Speaker
Mojisola Meranda has resigned as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly just 49 days after assuming office. Her resignation followed a meeting with former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, APC Lagos Chairman Cornelius Ojelabi, and the state’s Attorney-General, Lawal Pedro.
Announcing her decision, Meranda stated that she stepped down to uphold the integrity of the legislature while reaffirming her commitment to serving her Apapa 1 constituency. She also described her short tenure as historic, being the first female Speaker in the assembly’s history.
“I will never deviate from the path of honor and dignity laid down by my late father, the former Ojora of Lagos,” she said. “With this in mind, I officially step down as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, effective March 3, 2025.”
Meranda acknowledged the political dynamics surrounding her election as Speaker and emphasized that her resignation was a conscious decision to protect the integrity of the institution.
“We are representatives of the people, entrusted with safeguarding democracy. I made history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly and deeply appreciate the solidarity I received during my tenure,” she added.
She further stated that her decision was not a sign of weakness but a step to prevent unnecessary conflicts and embarrassment. “The party’s decision is supreme, and at this juncture, I take a bow as Speaker. Thank you all.”
Following her resignation, Meranda was immediately re-elected as Deputy Speaker of the assembly.
