More woes for Edo c¥ltists as Governor Okpebholo signs 21-Year Jail Term for offenders into law

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has signed the Secret c¥lt and Similar Activities Prohibition Bill, 2025, into law, repealing the Edo State Secret c¥lt Prohibition Law, 2018. The new law, passed by the Edo State House of Assembly, takes effect from January 24, 2025.

According to a statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the law introduces tougher penalties for c¥lt-related offenses. Individuals convicted of m¥rder in c¥lt-related activities face the d+ath penalty, while financial or material sponsors of c¥ltism will receive 21 years in prison.

The law also prescribes 10 years in prison and property demolition for those who harbor c¥ltists or allow their property to be used for c¥lt-related activities. c¥ltists involved in a§§ault, inj¥ry, or d+struction of property will face 21 years behind bars.

Itua emphasized that these measures aim to restore peace and security in Edo State, ensuring that law-abiding citizens can live without fear. He added that confiscating properties linked to c¥lt activities sends a clear message that crime will not be tolerated.

“This law is about protecting lives and securing the future of Edo State. c¥lt activities have destroyed too many young lives, and this administration is taking decisive action to reclaim the state from criminals,” Itua stated.
