Minimum Wage: Jubilation As 17 Governors Agree to Pay Workers N70,000, Set Up Panels

According to a report from The Punch, Seventeen state governors have established committees to oversee the implementation of the newly approved N70,000 minimum wage for workers, signaling good news for employees across the country.

According to reports released on Monday, the states that are prepared to pay the new wage include Ogun, Ekiti, Sokoto, Kebbi, Osun, Enugu, Borno, and 10 others.

This development comes after the federal government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, announced that civil servants would begin receiving the new minimum wage starting in September 2024.

The Accountant General of the Federation, Oluwatoyin Madein, confirmed the payment in a memo to the Budget Office.

States such as Edo, Lagos, and Adamawa have already begun paying the new salary, with Adamawa’s Governor Ahmadu Fintiri taking the lead, having paid workers the new minimum wage as early as August 2024.

Meanwhile, Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has pledged to implement the new wage in October 2024.

In a statement to The Punch, Emmanuel Fashe, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Adamawa, confirmed that local government workers received their updated salaries in September, following the payment to state workers in August.
