The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Akwa Ibom State has apprehended a couple for their alleged involvement in employment racketeering.

The arrest was announced by NSCDC Commandant Eluyemi Eluwade during a press briefing at the command’s headquarters in Uyo.

The suspects, Blessing Ezekiel, 27, and her husband, Joseph Ufot, 46, were detained on July 22 along IBB Avenue in the Uyo metropolis. According to Mr. Eluwade, the couple defrauded numerous individuals by using fake job advertisements as bait, collecting N4,800 from each victim and issuing fraudulent appointment letters.

The NSCDC commandant further revealed that the couple operated a fake UNICEF-sponsored NGO named Child Support Foundation.

They allegedly collected N1,000 each from families to register their children, promising them benefits from a non-existent grant. Over 7,000 children were reportedly registered under this scheme.

Mr. Eluwade condemned the act of collecting money from unsuspecting individuals with false promises of employment and urged job seekers to verify information and be cautious of such fraudsters.

The suspects are set to be arraigned in court following the conclusion of the investigation
