COSROPIN holds Golf Kitty for veterans, lauds Tinubu for ratifying rights of older persons charter

The Coalition of Societies for the Rights of Older Persons In Nigeria, COSROPIN, has organised a Golf Kitty for Veterans as part of its activities to commemorate this year’s United Nations Day for Older Persons.

Speaking during the event which took place at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja, the President of COSROPIN, Senator Eze Ajoku said the tournament was put together for older persons between the ages of 60 years and above

He said the move was to encourage exercise and sporting activities among older persons in the country.

According to him, the golf tournament which is being organized every year is also aimed at promoting healthy ageing among the elderly in the country

He used the opportunity of the tournament to appreciate President Bola Tinubu for approving the African Charter on the Rights of Older Persons in Nigeria.

Senator Ajoku said, with the ratification, Nigeria becomes the 13th member-state in the African region to affirm its obligations.

“I hope Mr President will compel two more African countries to ratify it because we need 15 African countries to make it binding on Africa because 20 countries have signed it but only 13 have so far ratified it” Senator Ajoku stressed

He noted that the Act would strengthen the protection of the rights of older persons through a binding regional legal instrument.

According to him, Nigeria will continue to play its part towards implementation of the UN Charter on the rights of older persons in Nigeria.

In a remark, one of the Participants and Past Lady Captain of IBB International Golf and Country Club, Dr. Joyce Barber commended COSROPIN for the annual golf tournament for older persons in the FCT and advised that it should be organized for other older persons outside Abuja.

According to her, apart from promoting healthy ageing, the annual golf tournament also enable the older persons to socialize thereby reducing isolation and depression among them

Highlights of the Golf Kitty for Veterans were goodwill messages and presentation of gifts to winners and the participants.
