Adamawa looting: Gov Fintiri relaxes 24-hour curfew

The government of Adamawa State has reviewed the 24-hour curfew that was put in place after thugs stole from government warehouses and private homes while pretending to be looking for painkillers in Yola, the state’s main city.

The curfew will now be in effect from Monday at 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. to allow individuals to go about their legal business.

Increased security will ensure adherence to the order and help maintain calm, according to the state governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who announced the review on Twitter on Monday.

“I, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, have taken the decision to ease the 24-hour curfew imposed across all 21 Local Government Areas in Adamawa State. The curfew has been reviewed from 6pm to 6am and will be hourly reviewed. Increased security presence will ensure compliance and maintain peace. Let’s continue working together for a peaceful Adamawa State!,” the governor said

News Agency reports that Governor Fintiri had declared a 24-hour curfew on the State, following a breakdown of law and order on Sunday.

The development followed looting of warehouses by residents, who carted away assorted foodstuffs and other valuables under the guise of looking for government’s ‘palliatives’.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Humwashi Wonosikou, in a statement said the curfew was effective immediately.

According to the statement, Governor Fintiri said the curfew followed the dangerous dimension the activities of hoodlums had assumed across the state capital city of Yola as they attacked people with matches and break into private business premises and homes carting away people’s belongings.

“With the curfew imposed, there will be no movement throughout the state,” he declared.

He said only those on essential duties with valid identification would be permitted to move around during the period of the curfew.

The Governor is appealing to citizens and residents of the state to comply with the directive,” he stated, adding that any person found contravening the order would be arrested and made to face the wrath of the law.
