IGP summons policemen who r@n vehicle over handcuffed man in Ekpoma


The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has ordered a team of policemen who ran a vehicle over a man in Ekpoma to appear in force headquarters, Abuja, on Monday. 


Egbetokun, who described the incident as troubling, said the police will not tolerate such act.


This is contained in a terse statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer, Ademuyiwa Adejobi, on Friday.


It  reads: “The Ag. Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, has condemned the disturbing incident where a police team ran a vehicle over a citizen on Thursday June 29, 2023 at Ekpoma, Edo State.


The IGP has, therefore, directed the erring policemen, who have been in detention in Edo State, to report to the Force Headquarters Abuja on Monday for further action. Members of the public, particularly the people of Ekpoma, are implored to remain calm as the present leadership of the NPF will not condone such an act of unprofessionalism and illegality. ”


News Agency  reports that the police officers ran their vehicle over a businessman simply identified as Success was on Thursday in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.


According to an eyewitness report, the officers allegedly wanted to check his phone, but he resisted. This led to the police handcuffing him.


In a bid to stop the fierce-looking policemen from arresting him, he laid in front of their vehicle, urging them to uncuff him. However, the officers drove on top of him, which resulted in the businessman sustaining serious injuries.


“People gathered and said there was no way the police officers were going to arrest the boy


When the pressure became too much for them, the officers got into their car and wanted to leave without uncuffing him


In a bid to stop them from leaving, he lay down in front of the car, hoping they would not move it, but they did; they ran over him,” the eyewitness stated.


The yet-to-be identified officers, however, took to their heels after running over the victim
